Meritorious Professor (R) Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan, PhD

Meritorious Professor (R) Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan has been appointed as Vice Chancellor of University of Science and Technology Bannu (USTB) by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in May, 2025, which is his 4th appointment as a VC. Dr. Khan has been a Meritorious Professor at University of Peshawar (UoP) and retired after serving for 33 long years.

He was appointed as a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology, University of Peshawar in 1990, completed his M.Phil. (in Psycho-diagnostics) from UoP and then Ph.D. in the area of Clinical/Social Psychology. In 2007 he was awarded with a Fulbright fellowship and has completed his Post Doc. from the University of California at Berkeley, USA in 2008-9. As a Fulbright Fellow, he was attached to the Graduate School of Education, Department of Psychology, and Psychology Clinic, where he completed his research project, worked at Psychology Clinic and delivered lectures at places like UC Berkeley, UV Albany and American University in Washington, DC. In 2012 he was awarded with his second post-doc Viz., Charles Wallace Fellowship to University of Leicester, UK, where he worked on his research papers.

He remained Chairman, Department of Psychology, University of Peshawar (for 2 terms), and Director Staff Training Institute, UoP. In 2011 he got a project approved from HEC for his Department, which has now been completed with an escalated cost of 48 million. In December 2011 he was appointed as Vice Chancellor, University of Swat (then a volatile region), where he added to the strength of the university by establishing 33 academic units including a specialized college of Home Sciences for girls (which is now Women Campus of UoS). Initially he acquired 1016 kanals of land and got an allocation of 2.4 billion rupees for the construction of UoS, Phase-I of which has now been completed.

In 2020 he was assigned the responsibilities of Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences at UoP and in 2021 he was appointed as Vice Chancellor, FATA University in Darra Adam Khel (another volatile region) where he not only established the first-ever University of Pakistan’s Western-boarder Tribal Region but also established 18 different academic units. It is a mega-project worth 7 billion rupees, phase-1 of which has almost completed. On the successful completion of his 3 years tenure in FATA University and on his return to Peshawar, he was appointed as Meritorious Professor and Vice Chancellor, University of Peshawar from where he retired in July 2024.

During his career he has been member of several statutory, academic and administrative bodies in different universities e.g. the Senate, Academic Council, Selection Board, and different national committees.

As an academician, Dr. Khan has been publishing in quality journals and also organized international and national conferences, seminars, webinars and workshops. He has been editing international and a national journals in the area of social sciences. He has also produced more than 17 PhD graduates at University of Peshawar. He established a Psychology Clinic, Assessment and Counselling Centre, and a Centre for Meta-Cognition and Para-Psychology at University of Peshawar. He has developed and adapted more than 30 cognitive and personality tests (e.g., Islamic Identity Scale, Pushto Adjectives Checklist, Teachers Evaluation Scales, Islamic Identity Scale etc). He is a leading researcher in the area of Pashtoon studies in social sciences in his part of the world. His other areas of interest are self and identity, social and clinical psychology, and psychometrics.

Dr. Khan was elected as President Pakistan Psychological Association (PPA) in 2015 and worked for it for more than 8 years and initiated a case for the establishment of Pakistan's National Psychological Council (NPC), which would be constituted as per procedure in the due course of time.
